Top Five (Rock, 2014)

Chris Rock channels Richard Linklater. Interestingly, not as well received or talked about as Linklater’s output, I suspect because among the film’s concerns are being black and a celebrity. The film was also essentially mis-sold as a comedy, which while it is funny it holds so much more in store: a self-reflexive confessional, a tangibly romantic reverie, a satire on celebrity culture and multi-faceted depiction of black identity toward the close of the Obama era. I loved it.
